True mentorship requires challenge and community. Through hands-on sailing, teamwork, and intentional character building, we guide young men to discover their potential, take responsibility, and chart a purposeful course for their lives. The program focuses on sail training, maritime education and life skills development for ages 14-18.
Historically the term "midshipman" dates back to the 17th century , when the more experienced sailors worked or berthed "amidships" (the central part of the ship). By the 18th century, the role transitioned from a regular seaman rating into an apprentice or officer candidate position. Candidates in the Midshipman Academy will be learning similar leadership skills and character traits as was necessary to become a leader and an officer.
This spring, the Savannah Midshipman Academy will accept applications for the 2027 season.
Sail training provides profound personal development, essential life skills, and hands-on experiential learning that extends far beyond the deck of a boat.
Maritime education empowers youth to discover their highest potential and fosters awareness and appreciation for the ocean through hands-on and at-sea experiences and education.
Personal Growth, life skills and Confidence are the results ratherthan the curriculum; Participants regularly step out of their comfort zones, helping them overcome fears, build resilience, and develop lasting self-assurance.
